Davitt: Irish Patriot and Father of the Land League
eBook and Hardcover - 178 pages - Illustrated - Published: November 2009 - ISBN: 0980166012

This is an illustrated biography of Michael Davitt (1846-1906), who was one of the most beloved and respected personalities in Irish history. He was immortalized as the "Father of the Land League" and was also a respected international journalist, author, supporter of Home Rule and Member of Parliament. Davitt loved America and was a frequent visitor. He married Mary Jane Yore, an Irish-American from Oakland, California. His family settled in Pennsylvania. His father is buried in Scranton and his mother is buried in Manayunk, Philadelphia. Davitt's legacy to Ireland was immense: a country almost free of the landlord ascendancy class, occupying-ownership of the land, a foundation for the development of an independent, inclusive, democratic State, and a wonderful role model for patriotic public service. Widely acknowledged as a hero in Ireland long before his death, Michael Davitt has a secure place in the history of his country and is rightly seen as one of its greatest patriots.

Reviews:

"The book is clearly written and complex issues, such as tenant right and 'rent at the point of a bayonet', are cogently explained." - The Irish Times

"Bernard O’Hara’s concise yet thorough review of Davitt’s life and contributions distills the essential points about Davitt’s life, times, achievements, and importance.  Davitt’s life embodied the complexities and many of the curiosities and paradoxes that have been increasingly recognized as part of modern Irish history.  Bernard O’Hara’s cogent, readable portrait of Davitt captures the independence, dedication, and integrity that Mayo tradition has long acknowledged and which modern Irish historiography now recognizes.  In the words of Joe Lee in his 2009 essay "Michael Davitt:  An Appraisal," 'The most noteworthy thing of all about Davitt was that striking though he was as a public figure, he was even more remarkable as a human being.'"
- Mary Helen Thuente, Professor of English, North Carolina State University

"...an easy-to-read and hugely informative account of the fascinating life of a man who will forever be known in Irish history as the Father of the Land League...Bernard O'Hara is one of Ireland's foremost scholars on Davitt and his command of his subject matter is clearly evident in this hugely informative biography...He has produced a book that is the perfect starting point for those who wish to learn about the extraordinary life of Michael Davitt." - Western People
